Taos, New Mexico
First stop in the Land of Enchantment.
WHere to stay
Mabel Dodge Luhan house. Former home of salon hostess, art patroness and writer, Mabel Dodge. Her close circle and former guests at the inn include Georgia O'Keefee, Ansel Adams, D.H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley among many, many other luminaries, creatives and thinkers. You can feel the magic in the walls here.
WHERE TO EAT/ DRINK
The Love Apple. Don't let the name put you off! Hands down the best meal we ate in Taos. The menu is centered around local, organic food and the wine list is great. Book ahead and bring cash, they don't accept cards.
Guadalajara Grill. No fuss, tasty tacos on the edge of town, opposite The Love Apple. The carnitas were good, make sure to try the super hot jalapeno peppers.
La Cueva Cafe. The tacos were average, but the ceviche was super tasty. Good option for lunch.
Taos Mesa Brewing. A microbrewery and live music joint located out of town on the gorgeous Toas Mesa, with views of the Sangre de Christo mountains in the background.
What to do
Harwood Museum of Art. I cannot speak highly enough of this gallery, which focuses primarily on art connected to Taos and northern New Mexico. We were lucky enough to catch the Mabel Dodge exhibition which featured works from Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier Bresson among many other incredible artists and photographers that I admire. A must see.
